The Southern California Society for the Study of American Women Writers will offer a moderated discussion on Elizabeth Keckley’s Behind the Scenes: Or, Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House (1868). We will discuss the use of this text in graduate and undergraduate courses. We welcome all who are interested. Many attendees will wish to read Keckley’s account (ideally the Penguin edition) in preparation for the discussion. A brief membership meeting will follow the discussion (approx. 15 minutes). SSAWW Announcements: Texas Regional SSAWW Study Group (RSVP: 2.3.14)

The next Texas Regional SSAWW Study Group meetings will be held on Saturday March 1, 2014 at the University of Texas San Antonio, hosted by Joycelyn Moody.

The common reading will be Jane Edna Hunter’s autobiography A Nickel and a Prayer (1940), edited by Rhondda Robinson Thomas, and recently reprinted as part of the West Virginia UP Regenerations Series (available here: http://wvupressonline.com/hunter_a_nickel_and_a_prayer_9781933202648). Andreá Williams, who is author of Dividing Lines: Class Anxiety and Postbellum Black Fiction (U Michigan, 2013), will be a special guest participant in the discussion.

Texas Regional SSAWW Group Meeting 10.12.13 (RSVP by 9.25.13)

The next meeting of the Texas Regional SSAWW Study Group will be Saturday October 12, 2013 at Weatherford College (outside DFW), hosted by Sarah Lock. The common reading will be Laura Curtis Bullard’s Christine, or Women’s Trials and Triumphs (1856), which fictionalizes the experiences of an early woman’s rights leader. We’ll be reading the 2011 U Nebraska edition, edited by Denise M. Kohn, and Dr. Kohn will be our special guest participant.

Our Fall 2013  meeting will focus on the writings of Victoria Woodhull. Cari Carpenter of West Virginia University, editor of Selected Writings of Victoria Woodhull: Suffrage, Free Love, and Eugenics,will lead the afternoon discussion.   In addition, we’ve arranged a morning tour of the Sewall-Belmont House, the headquarters of the National Woman’s Party.  Preliminary information is below; we’ll add more details and confirm times as the meeting date approaches.  In the meantime, please email Cathy Saunders with logistical questions, or Cari Carpenter with questions about the readings.
