SSAWW 2015 Conference Registration and SSAWW Membership

Dear Conference Participants,

As we move ever closer to the November conference, we are asking all of you who have not yet registered for the conference to please do so right way and no later than October 2nd.

We are also reminding everyone that conference participants must be SSAWW members (this is separate from the conference registration) and if you have not yet joined or renewed your SSAWW membership, we ask that you do so now, and again, no later than October 2nd.

The program will be going to print in October, and we want to ensure that it is accurate and that all the panels remain as dynamic and exciting as they are now. Please complete these registrations no later than October 2nd to ensure your inclusion on the program. If you are unable to do so, please let us know right away (ssaww2015.submit@gmail.com).

With all good wishes for the fall, and looking forward to Philadelphia,

The Conference Planning Committee: Rita, Dick, Beth, Miranda, Leslie, and Rickie-Ann

SSAWW 2015 Conference Update

Dear SSAWW conference participants,

Here is an updated draft schedule: SSAWW 2015 Draft Schedule, August

Please once again check your participation days/times since we have made some changes and configured some panels anew. For those of you chairing, some of the presenters on your panel may vary from when you signed on to chair so please double-check to see who is on your panel.

If you are no longer in a position to attend the conference, please let us know right away so we can adjust the very strong program we have in place accordingly: ssaww2015.submit@gmail.com

For those of you who have not yet registered, please do so as soon as possible.

Thanks for all the excellent work that has been put forward to create the conference program. We look forward to a wide range of stimulating and inspiring conversations.

Some things to note on the draft schedule:

The Mentoring Breakfast table topics are now listed and you can still sign up for this event as well as the lunch through the Wisconsin Registration site.

Our Wednesday night welcome sessions are in place.

The Chat with an Editor sign-ups will be available closer to the conference.

Our casual conversations for Sunday morning are a great opportunity for a few final meetings with friends and acquaintances old and new.

We are planning creative writers reading sessions, Philadelphia women writers walks, and working on a few other things.

We very much look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia.

Reminder: the graduate student travel awards are due August 30th, and the child care subsidy awards are due October 15th. And remember to ask your publishers to send books for the exhibit to The Scholar’s Choice.

All conference information is available at:

Best wishes for the coming term.

SSAWW 2015 Conference Hotel Updates

Hotel Updates: while our conference hotel block is sold out, even after negotiating for extra rooms, rooms at higher prices remain available at the Sheraton Society Hill.
http://www.sheratonphiladelphiasocietyhill.com/

But here are some very good alternatives within close proximity to the Sheraton, and we urge conference participants to book now while rooms at these reasonable prices are still in effect and available:

Wyndham Hotel – near the Sheraton Society Hill – has reduced rates if booked by August 31st for stays through 2016
http://www.phillydowntownhotel.com/special-pkg

Thanks to conference attendees who made the following suggestions:
Thomas Bond House, near the Sheraton Society Hill; prices vary but a few at a reasonable price are still available.
http://www.thomasbondhousebandb.com/

Hilton Penn’s Landing – a few blocks away; has a pool. It’s $199/refundable rate, but goes down to $184 if you use AAA or other discounts. Also there’s a pay in advance $179 rate nonrefundable – these prices may have already gone up.
http://www.hiltonpennslanding.com/

For other hotels, googling, hotels near the Sheraton Society Hill, or hotels Philadelphia Historic District, brings up a number of other hotels. If booking through an online booking agency, check the hotel’s website too to ensure you are getting the best price.

Airbnb – private home rentals; this is a good option especially if there are several conference attendees willing to share space.

The Society Hill area is very walkable at all times.

SSAWW 2015 Conference Reminder of Early Registration deadline and Hotel Update

The deadline for early registration for the conference is July 31s

registration site:

https://uw-whitewater-web.ungerboeck.com/reg/reg_p1_form.aspx?oc=10&ct=FULLREG&eventid=5836   (corrected)

Hotel rooms for Wednesday (especially) and Saturday night are very limited, but there are still lots of rooms remaining for Thursday and Friday nights at the conference rate. On the link to hotel registration, a note in red comes up if any one of the nights is sold out even if rooms remain available on other nights. We have asked the hotel to try to change this but it is part of their system to send alerts for the entire block. Please note: It is still possible to book rooms for some nights at the conference rate even if this notice is up.

Once our room block sells out for certain nights, rooms may still be available for those nights but at a higher rate, and need to be booked through the regular hotel site or by phone.

SSAWW 2015 Conference: Call for Reviewers

Dear SSAWWers,

Plans are well underway for the 2015 conference. We are excited about the response, continuing successful initiatives from past conferences, and hoping to introduce a few additional events such as a syllabus exchange.

Right now we are starting to organize the review process for submissions, and are asking for volunteer reviewers for the paper and panel submissions.

We hope to get the proposals (both individual and panel) out to vettors in the two weeks or so following the Feb. 13th deadline for submission, with a request for a three week turnaround time. Therefore the bulk of the work would be in March.

If enough vettors volunteer, we hope to keep the number of proposals for each vettor to between 12 and 15, a combination of individual papers and complete panels. Please email me directly (rbode@trentu.ca) or our conference query email (ssaww2015.query@gmail.com) if you are able to help with this important process, providing 1) your areas of expertise (can be broad); 2) your academic rank/institution (independent scholars and advanced graduate students most welcome).

We would very much appreciate your participation. We would be happy to provide a letter of appreciation for those who would like one.

Submitting proposals of your own does not preclude participation in the vetting process since we will ensure that conflicts are avoided.

Best wishes,

Rita, on behalf of the organizing committee.
