Assistant Professor

The English Department seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor. This is an academic, tenure-earning faculty position beginning August 1, 2018. All Valdosta State University faculty share the responsibility of teaching courses at multiple levels as needed in their respective disciplines. To carry out our comprehensive mission, we seek faculty with the desire and ability to successfully engage students as they launch or continue their intellectual journey.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a standard 4/4 load per academic year; conducting research leading to publication; and service at the department, college, and university levels.

Required qualifications include a PhD in English with a specialization in pre-1865 American literature; a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning, as well as scholarship; and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Preference will be given to those applicants with subspecialties in multi-ethnic American literatures (Native American,

African American, and/or ethnic literature of the Americas) and global perspectives (transatlantic, transnational, and/or hemispheric), as well as teaching experiences in composition and world literature.

The thirty full-time faculty members in the Department of English offer courses leading to a

BA in English, a residential MA in English, and an online MA in English Studies for Language Arts Teachers. Our department includes a track in literature and letters, allowing students to focus on literature or creative writing, and a track in journalism, allowing students to explore newswriting, magazine writing, or editing. We produce a campus newspaper, a magazine, a literary magazine, and an undergraduate research journal. Our faculty often win awards at the college and university level for excellence in teaching, service, and research.

Valdosta State University is a comprehensive university with a student enrollment of approximately 11,350.
