The Department of English invites applications for an associate or full professor of American Literature who will serve as department chair, beginning July 1, 2016. Particular curricular needs include nineteenth and twentieth-century American poetry; transnational and interdisciplinary approaches welcome. Demonstrable administrative experience is crucial; a strong record of teaching and scholarship is required. The department offers both English and English-Creative Writing majors; the department chair works closely with the Director of Creative Writing and the Colby Writing Program. Colby is a highly selective liberal arts college (with approximately 1850 students), recognized for excellence in undergraduate education and for close student-faculty interaction. Our faculty and students have the opportunity to work with significant resources in American art and literature with the Colby College Museum of Art and Colby Library Special Collections and benefit from interdisciplinary collaborations within the Center for the Arts and Humanities. The College has a generous sabbatical policy and offers funds for research and professional travel. To express interest, please send a cover letter/statement of interest, curriculum vitae, separate statements detailing teaching philosophy and research interests, and names and contact information for three references as .pdf attachments to Professor Laurie E. Osborne at AmericanistChairSearch@colby.edu. Review of applications will begin in late October and continue until the position is filled.
