We invite applications and nominations for the position of Head of the Department of English at Purdue University. The undergraduate English major consists of five tracks; the graduate programs in English include 5 master’s degrees, an MFA, and Ph.D. Faculty are also involved in such interdisciplinary programs as African American Studies, American Studies, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Sixty-one tenured or tenure-track faculty, 8 continuing lecturers, approximately 10 limited term lecturers, three administrative professional staff members, and 8 clerical staff employees, along with approximately 200 graduate students comprise the unit.
Required qualifications: terminal degree (Ph.D., M.F.A., D.F.A.) in any of the areas represented in the Department of English at Purdue (Literature, Creative Writing, English Education, Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition, Second Language Studies, Theory and Cultural Studies); qualifications for appointment at the rank of full professor at an AAU university; distinguished scholarly record; evidence of excellent teaching; evidence of effective prior leadership in an academic setting.
Preferred qualifications: Experience supervising and mentoring faculty and staff; experience working in humanities at a STEM oriented university. Ability to attract, mentor, and retain faculty and promote our department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Experience in innovative approaches to fund-raising.
Required duties: Manage department resources, recruit and retain personnel, guide faculty working toward tenure and promotion. Advocate on behalf of the Department’s mission and represent the department of the office of the Dean and Council of Department Heads. The head regularly teaches a graduate or undergraduate course in her or his area of expertise.
