Grants and Fellowships: AAS (1.15.14) and Manuscript Society (For graduate students; 2.14.14)

The American Antiquarian Society (AAS) invites applications for its 2014-15 visiting academic fellowships. At least three AAS-National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships will be awarded for periods extending from four to twelve months.  Long-term fellowships are intended for scholars beyond the doctorate; senior and mid-career scholars are particularly encouraged to apply. Over thirty short-term fellowships will be awarded for one to two months.

The short-term grants are available for scholars holding the Ph.D. and for doctoral candidates engaged in dissertation research, and offer a stipend of $1850/month.  Special short-term fellowships support scholars working in the history of the book in American culture, in the American eighteenth century, and in American literary studies, as well as in studies that draw upon the Society’s preeminent collections of graphic arts, newspapers, and periodicals. Accommodations are available for visiting fellows in housing owned by AAS.

The AAS is a research library located in Worcester, MA whose collections focus on American history, literature, and culture from the colonial era through 1876.  The Society’s collections are national in scope, and include manuscripts, printed works of all kinds, newspapers and periodicals, photographs, lithographs, broadsides, sheet music, children’s literature, and a wide range of ephemera. The grant supports research expenses directly related to use of original manuscripts, such as travel to manuscript repositories, photocopies, and user fees. CFP: How the ‘Big Data’ Viewpoint is Reshaping the Humanities (Deadline: 2.15.14)

Dartmouth’s Leslie Humanities Center and Neukom Institute for Computational Science invite proposals for participants in a conference Oct. 5-6, 2014, “How the ‘Big Data’ Viewpoint is Reshaping the Humanities.” Digital Humanities (formerly Humanities Computing) is a wide and expanding field that explores where computational methodologies and humanistic inquiry might intersect, and in doing so fundamentally shifts each of these subjects in new directions. Ranging from game development to archiving projects and datamining, the field uses emerging technical  and computational resources to provide access to knowledge and reshape its meanings. Increasingly, new approaches designed for the collection, analysis, and visualization of large data sets are becoming relevant for investigations in the humanities. This meeting will focus on these innovative approaches.

Proposals for poster session presentations of 15 minutes on innovative work at the intersection of computation and the humanities are welcome. Selected participants will receive lodging from the organizers and transportation to Dartmouth/Hanover NH. Application deadline: February 15, 2014. CFP Update: Society for American Travel Writing (ALA; Deadline Extended to 1.15.14)

The Society for American Travel Writing will host two sessions at the American Literature Association’s 25th Annual Conference, 22-25 May 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Scholars of American travel writing and practicing travel writers are particularly encouraged to submit proposals.

Panel 1: Travel Writing in the Age of Instant Feedback

Today’s travelers have the ability to tweet, blog, and “Yelp” about their experiences, eliciting immediate rather than reflective commentary from a global, online audience. In this age of instant feedback, the reader gains direct access to authorship, diminishing the distinction between the author and public in ways reminiscent of Walter Benjamin’s observations about the effects of mechanical reproduction on aesthetic sensibility.

Shirley Jackson: Beyond the Gothic (ALA; Deadline 1.20.14).

            Shirley Jackson was a prolific writer, writing in a variety of genres, publishing in a plethora of venues, and addressing many different audiences. Yet, too often, scholarship has been limited to a discussion of her contribution to the gothic. This panel seeks new interpretations of Shirley Jackson’s work that move beyond the gothic. Readings that situate her work historically in context of the Cold War, consider her in comparison with other contemporary writers of the time, or address issues of race, gender, and disability within her work are especially welcome. Additionally, this panel seeks to devote interest to her lesser-known works. Please submit an abstract between 150-300 words and a brief bio to Leslie Allison at leslie.allison@temple.edu by January 20, 2014. Selected papers will be included in a proposed panel for the American Literature Association’s 2014 Conference in Washington, D.C., May 22-25.

Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Digital Humanities Northeastern University

The Northeastern University Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program; the Northeastern NULab for Texts, Maps, and Networks; and the Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities announce a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship to begin July 1, 2014. Specialization may be in any area of social sciences or humanities, with a clear commitment to feminist interdisciplinary work in both gender/sexuality studies and digital humanities. We welcome textual, theoretical, or empirical projects in any field or period that examine questions at the intersection of digital humanities and feminism, gender, and sexuality. Research proposals should involve substantive engagement with both digital humanities and feminist/gender studies; the strongest proposals will include a project component and will address the complex intersections of gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity.
